For
starters, "Us" is not a team of highly paid web designers. (Though
it has been asked, from time to time, how many people it took to design
and create this visually appealing, yet extremely informative site.) "Us"
is just one man, forever trying to
help
educate the public about the wonderful things that can be done with computers.
Jake Russell, who is
currently engaged to wed his beautiful fiancée Lisa, started working
with computers in the days of Commodore 64's and IBM PCjr's, to both of
which he had permanent access, thanks to the foresight of his grandfather.
Upon discovering a wonderful new toy called a "modem", he was
immediately addicted to the online world, and has never looked back. As
for his age; don't let the picture fool you. He is, shall we say, "well
beyond 21"... Quite the "blue jeans and tee shirt" type,
he is a firm believer that a suit and tie is in unnecessary in the business
world, provided one can offer a valuable service to others.
Some
of the more useful things he has done include the creation and administration
of Sofa Muncher's BBS, Pittsburgh's fastest growing online bulletin board
system in the early 1990's. Featuring both ANSI and state of the art RIPscript
graphics, chat rooms, forums, games, over 200 nodes, thousands of subscribers,
and blazing-fast (for the time) 28.8 modems, he found that people could
not get enough of his service. Amazed that he could do something so fun
and have people stand in line to throw money at him, he decided to stick
with "this whole internet thing" and progressed to websites
as more advanced technology became readily available to the public, and
eventually founded the renowned Free Web Designs Of Pittsburgh, which
succeeded where others had failed by offering something unheard of at
the time - Free professional website design. And yes, it was really free.
In exchange for this service, he asked that clients agree to a one to
three year contract for hosting services. This practice was eventually
picked up by others, and has since become more and more common in an environment
where people have come to expect something for nothing when they're connected
to the internet.
Jake
has freelanced as a telecommunications consultant throughout his career.
He has also worked for various telephone and cable companies, primarily
in an IT capacity, and has been featured from time to time in various
computer and business magazines.
During
all of this time, Jake never forgot his primary role as an instructor.
Since his humble beginnings, he has taught thousands of people how to
use their computers more efficiently and effectively. From ADSL to Z-Modem,
the lessons have changed with the times, but the role remained the same.
Still
blazing trails on the internet, he has taken up the cause of teaching
others how to produce and enjoy his latest personal obsession -
